    Let there be two forces in equilibrium on the fluid, then (1) Ph + P’ti = 0 and (2) ah-f ah' = 0. Let a = a', then h - — h\ and P - P' = 0, or P = P', and since these forces may be applied at any part of the surface, the transmitted action is equal in all directions. Again, let (2) be multiplied by a quantity (<7), then subtracting from (l), (P ~ q a) h + (P' - q a) ti + ... = 0, which cannot be satisfied in all cases unless P — qa~ 0, &c.; whence P = qa, Pf = qa\ &c.; or the pressures are pro¬ portional to the areas pressed.
