    the healthy parts by which they are sur- rounded. It is not only necessary for the surgeon • to know the nature of the structure of the tumour, but in many cases it is important to examine with accuracy the parts sur- rounding it, and the mode in which it is connected with them. There is a particular species of tumour, met with in the neck, and probably in other situations, which is contained in a cyst, and only loosely connected with it by small blood-vessels from its surface and cellular membrane. It is of a yellowish-white colour, and somewhat resembles a kidney. It is of a uniform texture; and when al- lowed to increase to a considerable size, some portions become more compact than others. This tumour is very common; and in its removal it is only necessary to lay open the cyst, and disengage the tumour with the finger. This I have frequently done: but
