    Vessco: @f Foe ELM True to the century-old legend, the little Italian Duchy of Lucco lived for one thing only—music—and a debt of ten million crowns due to Austria remained unpaid. The demands of Austria’s Ambassador became so pressing, however, that Lucco’s Princess Regent, to meet the situation, banned all music from the State until the people worked and paid their debts. Mario Carlini, Lucco’s enthralling tenor and national hero, returning to give his annual concert, was staggered by the situation. With the aid of bandits and Jonah J. Whistler, an American journalist, the concert was eventually held—in secret—only for Carlini, Jonah Whistler, and his daughter, Sadie, to be thrown into jail as a result. With Lucco in revolt, how- ever, the Princess was forced to surrender, particularly when Carlini organised a State Opera, money poured into the Duchy, and Austria’s debt was paid.
