    [ *7 ] The ftatutes of the univerfity difpenfe with two terms of refidence in Handing for a bachelor's de- gree in arts, and with three more in Handing for that of a mafter of arts * : there are few inftances in which ftudents do not avail themfelves, to the fulleft extent of this difpenfation. Admitting then four years and a half to be the whole of the time of refidence, that is ever actually ob- ferved for the degree of mafter of arts, if we de- duct the five terms difpenfed with by the uni- verfity ftatutes, then is the actual time of local •ftudy ftill greatly reduced, and may be eftimated at the utmoft to be three years and a half.
