Op. 3: London, printed for Welcker, fabt. 1775} Oblong folio, engraved throughout, unbound. £228: BIRCHENSHA (John), Templum Musicum: or, the Musical Synopsis of the Learned and Famous Johannes- Henricus-Alstedius, being a Compendium of the Rudi- ments both of the Mathematical and Practical Part of Musick: of which Subject not any Book is extant in our English Tongue. Faithfully translated out of Latin. London, printed by Will. Godbid, 1664. Sm. 8vo, with the very scarce engraved frontispiece by J. Chantry, music and diagrams, half calf. £7 10s. Pepys’s Diary, March 4th, 1666-67: ‘‘ This day in the barge I took Berckenshaw’s translation of Alsted his Templum, but the most ridiculous book, as he has translated it, that ever I saw in my life, I declaring that I understood not three lines together from one end of the book to the other.” Birchensha began to teach Pepys music in January 1662, but at the end of February Pepys and he fell to hard words, and Birchensha flung himself out of the house ‘“‘in a pet,” which Pepys did not mind as he felt that Birchensha had taught him all he could and it would be better to save his fees!
