![[ *3 ] BOOKS PRINTED UPON VELLUM. 9168 LIVII PATAVINI (Tin) HISTORIARUM DECADES, cum Epislola Joannis Andreaj Episcopi Aleriensis ad Pauliim Secundum Pontlficem Maximum, fikst edition, in the OLD OUNAMENTED BINDING. fol. RoM.E MCCCCLXIX. This splendid specimen of the Press of Sweynheyiu and Pannartz, is the only copy upon vellum of the First Edition of Livy, known to exist. It is without date, but was printed in 1409. It appears by the arms on the first page of the History, to have been taken off for Alexander VI. when Vice Chancellor of the Roman .See, and Governor of the Monastery of Soubiaco, where .Sweynheym and Pannartz took up their abode when they introduced the art of print¬ ing into Italy. This volume was afterwards in the Convent of the Benedictines at Milan. When their Library was dispersed at the commencement of the French Revolution, it came into the hands of a Bookseller in that city, who sold it to the Abbate Canonici of Venice, from whom it was obtained by the late Mr. Edwards. The Four most valuable productions of the fifteenth cen¬ tury UPON vellum are : the Mazarine Bible ; the Psalter OF 1457 ; THE Livy of 14C9; and the Florence Homer OF 1488. If rarity alone be considered, the Livy is ENTITLED TO THE PRE-EMINENCE, IT IS ALSO THE ONLY ONE OF THESE WHICH WILL IN ALL PROBABILITY EVER OCCUR ON Sale in perfect condition. 9169 TEWRDANNCHTS; or, the Perilous Adventures of that famous Hero and Knight Tewrdannchts, a Romance Poem in German verse, celebrating the marriage of the Emperor Maximilian with the Princess Mary of Burgundy.
