![tions, the efficiency attained by the men can be readily determined. But one cannot absorb all the important points of a lecture; and it occurred to the author that if the gist of such lectures were presented in a convenient form, it might serve as a useful adjunct to them. It is only by frequent reference to' such a work as is here offered that a valuable and trustworthy familiarity with the subject can be acquired. The main points considered are, how to keep the men in good health under such circumstances as they may be placed when on military duty, particularly in camp, and the simple treatment of the common complaints and accidents to which the soldier is liable. Rules and statements have been made brief and explicit, avoiding technical terms. Although these notes have been written es- pecially for the militia, many of them will be found equally serviceable in civil life.
