Frs. 60, — Early Italian edition of this important work on curative plants, drugs, etc. of India and America, translated and annotated by no less a botanist than Charles de l’Ecluse. ‘‘ The most important and the greater part of the accounts we have of this time on the tlora of the East Indies are due to Garcia d’Orta. He was physician to the Portuguese viceroy at Goa. He practi- ced for thirty years in India, being always interested in collecting plants. He even founded a botanical garden at Bombay ’’ (Meyer, Geschichte der Bota- nik, IV, p. 407). — Rather waterstained, especially towards the end. GATINARIA, Marcus. Gatinaria, born at Vercelli, was physician in Milan and Pavia and died in 1496. His De curis aegritudinum is his chief-work and contains many interesting surgical observations. In the chapter 47 is contained the description of a syringe. Particularly remarkable is Sebastianus Aquilanus’ treatise on syphilis, a very early and interesting work on this disease with detailed prescrip- tions for the healing of syphilis. The treatise is divided into the following chapters: De nomine huius egritudinis, a necessario consequentibus, a casibus sive accidentibus, de unitate et pluritate huiusmodi morbi, de modo cura- tionis. — Somewhat very waterstained, numerous annotations by an early hand.
