Frs. 50,.— Collection of three works by Mizauld, belonging to medical botany, phar- maceutics, wine and its healing powers, etc. ‘¢ Mizaldus was born at Montlugon, studied at Bourges and Paris, where he graduated, and devoted himself to medical practice, in which he acquired much success and renown by the extraordinary cures which he effected ’’ (Ferguson). Palau y Dulcet V, p. 211. ‘* Monardes’s work, which is the earliest ‘‘ American” herbal, was translated into Latin by no less a botanist than Charles del’ Escluse, and into Italian, Flemish, French and English. Monardes tells us of various herbs and gums brought from the New World, and of what the herbalists had been able to learn of their medicinal virtues. He writes of Copall, Anime, Taca- mahaca, Balsamo, Guiacum, etc. One of the most interesting accounts is of Mechoacan ’’ (Rhode, Old English Herbals). — Slightly browned, but nice copy.
