Folio. Vellum. Paris, Jacques Dupuys, 1582. Frs. 125.— First Latin edition. This first Latin translation was issued whilst Paré was still living. It is considered the third edition of his ‘‘ Oeuvres’’, and includes, besides his surgical work, all his other writings except his treatise on his voyages wich appeared only in 1585. Of the 27 works enumerated in the table we mention the following ones: Via ad chirurgiam compendiaria. De humani corporis anatome (with good co- pies of Vesalian figures). De vulneribus igniariis machinis et telorum illisis. De fracturis (with figures of bandages, reducers, etc.). De luxationibus (with woodcuts illustrating operations). De venenis. De lue venerea. De hominis generatione (with foetus figures). De deficentium supplemento (with pictures of artificial limbs, eyes, teeth). De multis quae chirurgia curantur affectionibus (with numerous figures of surgical instruments). De monstris et prodigiis. De destillationibus (with several woodcuts of distilling apparatus). Etc. Ete. Title-page and one leaf of the text loose and stained, somewhat brown- stained as.usual, 20 pp. of the text missing, besides that a well preserved copy. Complete copies of this edition are prized from 500 to 600 Swiss Francs. — See reproduction p. 56. PARE, A. Old calf (back damaged). Vlissingen, Pieq, 1655. Frs, 80.— Rare Dutch edition of the Opera Omnia. Contains not only Paré’s surgical work, but also his other works. Rare like all copies of Paré’s works, — Pages 385-388 wanting. — A few leaves loose, but a good copy of this work which as a rule is imperfect. — See reproduction p. 56. PAULUS OF AEGINA. Medicinae totius enchiridion. Albano Torino interprete. 34 leaves, 767 pp. 8vo. Old vellum. Basel, Opo- rinus, 1551. Frs. 55.— Choulant p. 142. — Good edition of this classical work. Paulus of Aegina (beginning of 7th century) enjoyed great fame as surgeon aud obstetrician and the sixth book of his work * De chirurgia ” was the standard work of this subject up to the time of Albucasis, who indeed drew upon it for most of his information. Ie gives the fullest account we have of the eye surgery and military surgery of antiquity. — Fine copy, only one corner of the bin- ding gone.
