After his time was expir’d (for he that is Profeffor enjoyeth the Ledure but for f Years) Joh. Barnard M. A. of Brafen. Coll, was elected thereunto, 28 Mar. 1687, by virtue of the Mandamus of K. jam. II, dated on the firft of January going before. After his removal thence for being a Papift, (tho’ fince return’d to his former opinion) which was after the faid King left England, Will. Chrijimas M. Ch.-He hath publifhed two or more Books. May 27. Nathaniel Williams of Jef. Coll.-He was the Son of Thomas Williams of Swanfey in Glamorganjhire went away without compleating his degree by Determination and was Author of (1) A pindaric Elegy on the famous Phyfician Dr. Willis. Oxorj. 167^. in one Ih. in fol. (2) Imago fteculi: or the image of the age reprefented in four characters, viz. the ambitious Statefmen, infatiable Mifer, athefiical Gallant, and failious Schematic. Oxon. 1676. od. The Pindaric Elegy is printed with, and added to, this laft book. He died in his own Country about 1679. June 13. Sam. Derham of Magd. James Bampton of New Coll. — This Perfon, who took no higher degree, entred aftei wards into holy Orders, and publifhed a Sermon, but the title of it I know not, only the text which is, Suffer little children to come, &c, Mark 10. 14.1 He alfo had provided another thing for the prefs, which 1 think is not yet publifhed, or ever will. He died of a con- fumption, 9 May 1683, aged 37, and was buried in the weft Cloyfter belonging to that Coll. Admitted 11. Maft. of Arts. June 8. Joh. Hough of Magd. Coll. July 3. Edm. Sermon of St. Mary’s Hall——This Perfon, Who was the Son of a Father of both his names of Naunton Beauchamp in Worcejlerfhire, was originally of Trtn. and after¬ wards of Bal. Coll, and as a member of the laft he took the degree of Batch, of Arts, An. 166y, but left the Univerftty without compleating it by Determination. Afterwards he took upon him a fpiritual cure, and the education of a youth of noble extradion, but inftead of taking the degree of Batch, of Div. (in order to which heliad the Chancellor’s Letters) he with much ado obtained that of Mafter. He hath publiftied The wifdom of public piety, difeourfed in a Sermon at Guildhall Chap, on Jam. 3. 13.Lond. 1679. qu. He died about 1680. Nearly related to him was that forward, vain, and conceited Perfon named Will- Sermon, who wrote himfelf Dedor of Phylic, and Phyfi¬ cian in ord. to his Maj. K. Ch. II. Author of (1) The Ladies companion or Englifo Midwife, &c. Load. 1671. od. (2.) A friend to the fick, or the honefl Enghjhman'’s prefervation, &c. Thefe were both Compounders, as being dignified in the Church. On the 20th of Sept. 1660, the firft was inftalled Preh. of Worcejlcr, and on the iyth of Apr. 1661, Archdeacon of Norfolk on the death of Philip Tenifon: which laft Dignity was confer’d upon him by his Father Dr. Edw. Reyn. Bifh. of Nor¬ wich. The other was Preb. of Norwich, and had fome other preferment in the Church. Silicon. The firft of thefe two, who was originally of Mert. Coll, was now Canon of Sf. Davids, and afterward Archd. of Car¬ marthen. Incorporations. July 6. Will. Howell, or as he writes himfelf Hoelus, Dod. of the Civil Law of Cambridge-He was educated in Magd. Coll, in the faid Univerfity, of which he was Fellow, was af¬ terwards Tutor to John Earl of Mulgrave, and at length Chan¬ cellor of the Diocefe of Lincoln. He hath written ( 1) An in- fiitution of general Hiftory from the beginning of the world to the Monarchy o/Conftantine the Great. Printed 1661. od. In this work the Reader may, without any intervening matters imper¬ tinent to his prefent purpofe, read the Hiftory of any Empire or Kingdom contemporary to it, by it felf. The principal paffages in ail of them are linked together by Synchronifms, not only placed in the Margin, but in the beginning or end of every oc¬ currence. This book, which was afterwards put into Latin by the Author, for the ufe of the faid Earl, emit! Elementa Hftl- rice oh or be condito ttfque ad Monarchiam Confiantini magni See Lond. 1671. in a thick tw. was increafed to two folio’s._! Lond. 1680. and afterwards had three remaining parts of it pub¬ liftied in i68y 6. (2) Medulla Hiftoris Anglicans. Being a comprehenfive Hftory of the lives and reigns of the Monarchs of England. From the time of the invafion thereof by Julius Csfar to the death of K. Ch. II.. with an abfiraCl of the lives of the Roman Emperors commanding in Britain. There have been feveral edi¬ tions Of this book to the great benefit of the Bookfeller that printed it. One came out in 1679, with the addition of A HJl of the names of the H. of Com. then fitting, and a lift of his Maje- Jly's Privy Council, &c. And in 1687 the third edix. of it was pub¬ liftied in od. with a continuation from the Year 1678, to 1684, by a great favourer of the Roman Catholics. There is no name fet to this Medulla Hft. Angl. only report makes Dr. W. Howell the Author, and upon that report, I prefume here to fet it down under his name. He hath without doubt other things extanr iut fuch I have not yet feen, and therefore 1 can only now fay that he died in the beginning of the Year 1683. One Will. Howell Minifter of Tuttleworth in Suffex hath publiftied A Ser¬ mon at the Bifh op o/Chichefter’jfirft Vjitation. This Year were 28 Mailers of Arts of Cambridge incorpo¬ rated after the Ad, on the nth of July, among whom were, Thomas Lynford of Chrft's Coll.-He had been lately the ingenious Prevaricator of Cambridge, was afterwards Redor of St. Edm. Lumbard-fireet in London, D. D. Chaplain in Or¬ dinary to their Majefties King Will. III. and Queen Mary, &c. Author of three or more Sermons, and of four difeourfes a- ^ainft Popery in the time of King Jam. 2. &c.
