Coll, was created Dodl. of Div. by virtue of the Letters of the delegated power of the Chanc. which fay that he hath been feveral Tears attendant upon the Duke of Lauderdale in his Majefty's fervice in the Kingdom fi/Scotland, as well as in England--that he hath done remarkable fervice to the Church 0/England during his abode in that other Kingdom, and hath received feveral marks of honour from the late Archb. of St. Andrew’s, and the Clergy of Scot¬ land, &c. John Snell born at Comonell in Carrick, in the SherrifFdome of Ayre in Scotland, bred in the Univerfity of Glafcow under Jam. Darumpley Prof, of Philofophy, of which he was after¬ wards diplomated Mall, of Arts, died in the houfe of Mr. Benj. Cvfer in Halywell in the fuburb of Oxon on the fixth day of Aug. this Year, aged yo Years (after he had fpent fome time there) and was buried at the upper end of the Chancel (under the north wall) of the Chap, or Church of St. Crofs of Haly¬ well. This I mention, becaufe that in his lalt Will and Tella- ment he bequeathed the Manor of Uffeton zWasOlufeton alias Ul- veton in the County of IVarwick, worth about 470/. per. An. to be employed (after certain Years fpent, and moneys rais’d and paid thence) for the maintenance of certain Scotch Scholars in fuch Coll, or Hall in Oxon, that the Vicechancellor of the Univ. of Oxon, Provoll of Qu. Coll. Mailer of Bal. Coll, and Prefident of St. John's Coll, for the time being, fball think fit. Their number is not to be above twelve, or under five, to be chofen from Glafcow Coll, from the number of fuch that had fpent 3 Years, or two at the leall, there, or one or two in fome other Coll, in Scoland, &c. They are to enjoy the faid exhibi¬ tion about ten or eleven Years, and then they are to return in¬ to their own Country to get preferment there, &c. This eftate Mr. Snell got by being firft a Clerk under Sir Orlando Bridgman, while he had Chamber-pradice in the time of Ufurpation. Se¬ cond ly by being Cryer of the Court of Exchequer while the faid Sir Orl. was L. Chief Baron thereof, and of the Common-pleas when Sir Orl. was Ch. Juilice of that Court, and laftly by be¬ ing Seal-bearer when he was Lord Keeper.
