![WAL WAL town of the Netherlands, in the county of Namur, and on the confines’ of Hainault, W aces, a principality in the W.of Eng- land, comprehending 12 counties, namely, Carnarvonfhire, Denbighfhire, but were obliged to retreat with great lofs, rythire, in N. Wales; Brecknockfhire, Car- Charleroy, and 27S. W. of Namur. Lon, Ge thee Beal. N. * WaLDECKX, a county of Germany, in the circle of Weftphalia ; bounded on the E. and S. by the landgravate of Heffe- Caffel ; on the W. by the duchy of Weftphalia; and on the N. by the bifhoprick of Pader- born ; being about 30 Miles in length, and 20 - breadth. It is a mountainous coun- try, covered with woods; and there are mines of iron, copper, quick-filver, and alum. The principal town is of the fame name, and fubjeé to its own prince, WALDEN, commonly called Sarrron- 'WaLpEn, a town in Effex, wtth a market on Saturdays, and two fairs, on Midient. Saturday, for horfes, and on November 1, for cows. It is well inhabited, and feated on an afcent, among plieafant fields of faf- fron, which is bere cultivated. It was for- merly noted for its caftie and abbey ; and nor far from it was the ftately houfe called Audiey-end, accounted as magnificent as any ia the kingdom, in the reign of king Charlies 1]. It is governed by a mayor, 12 aldermen, and.a recorder. It has a fine large old church of the Gothic order, with a prefbyterian, a baptift, and a quaker’s mecting-houfe. Itisa large ftrageling place. with the ftreets not paved. A great deal of malt is made here. It is 27 miles N. W, by N. of Chelmsford, and 42 N. by E. of ' Bondonz “Lon. 1. rg. E. lat. 52. 5. N. See Vaupois. * WaLvERSHARE, a villagein Kent, 5 miles S. of Sandwich, with one tair, on Whit-Tuefday, for pedlars ware. ~ Waxrpxiex, a {mall town of Germany,’ in Auftrian Brifgaw, and in an ifland formed by the river Eltz, 5 miles from Friburg. Lon. 8 3.E. lat. 48. 9. N. Watpscuut, a ftrong town of Germa- ny, in the circle of Suabia, and one of the four foeft-towns, fubjeét to the houfe of Auftria. It is feated at the place where the river Schule falls into the Rhine, at the en- trance of the Black Foreft, 17 miles W. of hire, Pembrokefhire, and Radnorfhire, in S. Wales. This country is, for the moft part, mountainous, but its produce fuf- ficient for the maintainance of the inhabi- tants. Its the country where the ancient Britons fled, when this ifland was invaded by the vi€torious Saxons, are now called Welch, and continue to preferve their own language. The Weftern part is bounded by St, George’s channel, and the Irifh Sea; the fouthern by ‘the Briftel channel; the northern by the Irith Sea; and the eaftern by the counties of Chefter, Salop, Hereford, and Monmouth. It contains 751 parifhes, 58 market towns, and above 300,000 peo- ple. The air is clear and (harp, but the cat-_ tle fmall, and provifions in general good and cheap, Wales is particularly remark- able for goats, which naturally delight in billy countries; for fewel they ufe wood, coals, and turfs. They have feveral creeks and harbours for fhips, but the moft re- markable is, Milford-Haven, where 1,000 vefiels may fafely ride at time.. It is wa- tered. with many rivers, of which the prin- cipal are the Dee, Wye, Utk, Conway, Cluyd, and Twy. The principal towns muft be fought for uncer the names of the counties. .
