    In this affe&ion of the bowels, the Doftor fays he has always found fuch a gentle medi- cine as this more efficacious than any draftic purge whatever. It is not fpecified in the original prefcription, which of the cathartic falts is intended, viz. whether it be the bitter cathartic fait, i. e. the vitriolated magnefia, or the cathartic fait of glauber, i. e. the vi- triolated natron. The effe6ts of both being the fame, either of them may be ufed indif- ferently. 3. Draught with Rhubarb and Manna. Take of Tamarinds, half an ounce, Senna-leaves, two drams. Rhubarb, a dram and a half : Boil them in a fufficient quantity of water, and ftrain off three ounces. Diflolve therein of Manna, an ounce. To be taken early in a morning. In dyfente- ries. With the omiffion of the fyrup of rofes, which feems to be a cumberfome addition to a me- dicine otherwife rather too bulky, this is the fa- vourite potio cathartica lenitiva of Sydenham. 4.
