    rested on one of the dorsal vertebrae he grew pale and terrified, and would have fainted had the pressure been continued. He felt no pain, but a sudden indes- cribable sensation or thrill through every nerve in his frame, which was inconceivably horrid, he shuddered at the idea of permitting a repetition of the pressure, and had an unpleasant feeling about the part for the remainder of the day. When a few weeks had elapsed, however, he allowed another examination with precisely the same results. I know of no class of cases in which general massage does so much good as in spinal irritation. Very often the patients have long been in the habit of taking morphia, but this mode of treatment will enable the physician to discon- tinue its use, or at all events materially diminish the dose. I recently had under my care a lady who was to the best of my belief suffering from this condition. She was probably about forty-two years of age, but might well have passed for thirty-four or at the out- side thirty-six. She was not in the least degree hysterical, and was one of the best read and most accomplished women I have ever met. She was a good linguist, a painter in oils, a musician, and could
