    SWELLINGS AND THICKENINGS. of a wealthy merchant, was for many years subject to epileptic fits, and was treated in vain by the most eminent physicians, both in Edinburgh and London. At last he was cured by Mr. Beveridge. Beveridge discovered a crop of deposits, rubbed them away, and the lad got well. Dr. Johnson says : —I knew the young gentleman, and I knew his parents, and there is no doubt of the truth of this statement. The theory about the deposits may not be worth much, but still empirical observations such as these deserve consideration. The value of friction in maintaining the health, is referred to by many writers of repute. Lord Bacon for example points out that frictions make the parts more fleshy and full as we see, both in men and in the currying of horses. The cause is for that they draw greater quantity of spirits and blood to the parts, and again because they draw the ailment more forcibly from within ; and again, because they relax the pores and so make better passages for the spirits, blood, and ailment; lastly because they dissi- pate and digest any inutile or excrementitious mois- ture which lieth in the flesh ; all which help assimila-
