![[Reprinted from The Quarterly Medical Journal, October, 1896.] AN ACCOUNT OF THE LAST ILLNESS, DEATH, AND POST-MORTEM EXAMINATION OF WILLIAM HEY, F.R.S.1 BY EDWARD ATKINSON, Consulting Surgeon to the Leeds General Infirmary, &c. I HAVE been reminded that it is customary for the new President to deliver a short opening address. This duty is one which each year becomes more difficult, because in these days of many opportunities and much talking it is next to impossible to find a topic possessing any element of novelty, and at the same time, the correlative requisites of appropriateness and inteiest. In these straits it occurred to me that having on the recent occasion of a change of residence—one of those seismic convul¬ sions that bring all kinds of flotsam and jetsam to the surface discovered an old document of some inteiest which had come down to me through three generations of ancestois, I might venture to use it for my present purpose. This was no less than a brief but original record of the last illness, death and post-tnot'tetn examination of my gieat-giand- father, William Hey, F.R.S. I will now, with your permission, read the memorandum verbatim as I found it : it is in the handwriting of his son, my grandfather. 1 Part of address as President of the Yorkshire Branch of the British Medical Asso¬ ciation, delivered at Leeds on June ij, 1S91.](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b30799211_0003.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
