![[ 29 ] HIC JACET GYMNOTUS ELECTRIGUS: A SPEM GREGIS, AH ! SILICE IN NUDA*—REL IQUIT. NON L^TA SPE CARNIS RESURRECTIONIS. * Mr. Dryden, in his tranflation of Virgih hath haftily, or injudiciouOyj,, rendered nuda filicey rocks. It is> literally, on the bare flint ftones. But every man, acquainted with the two languages, will allow the bare and na¬ ked ftones to more ftrongly imprefs the author’s meaning,, than any other words. V/erel to tranflate the Latin of this epitaph, I lliould endeavour to render it thus, as being nearefl: to the fenfe of the author, though I am confident, I cannot doit that juflice it merits : it being far beyond the flight of a feminine pen—it requires more mafculine touches. HERE LIES THE ELECTRICAL EEL; ALAS ! THE HOPE OF SHEPHERDESSES FLOCKS, LEFT AND NEGLECTED ON THE NAKED STONES, WITHOUT THE HOPE OF THE RESURRECTION OF THE FLESH.
