    to the efflorescence of erysipelas, but in ery- thema the edema when present precedes the - cutaneous inflammation. In scarlatina the cedema does not supervene till after the total disappearance of the efflo-’ rescence. Erysipelas, when about to be severe, is com- monly ushered in, in the words of our illustri- ous Cullen, by ‘* Synocha duorum vel trium dierum, plerumque cum somnolentia, szepe cum ” delirio.’ These symptoms, in my opinion, fur- nish a‘strong analogical proof of its infectious nature, and pointedly evince that it is fre- quently a disease, perhaps always, originating in constitutional idiopathic derangement. Erythema, if it does not arise from an exter- nal cause, is frequently symptomatic of some ‘disorder of the prime viz. Erysipelas is said to originate from the same source.
