    FOOD INSPECTION. The inspection of Food Imports, except during a brief period when fresh meat was being imported from Ireland, has been of a normal character. Seventeen Magistrates’ Orders for destruction were granted during the year, this being necessary owing either to a nuisance, from decomposition, or through difficulty in obtaining a responsible person to surrender the articles. During the months of September and October, owing to the risk of navigating the North Sea, from the extensive sowing of floating mines, a considerable amount of Danish trade in food stuffs was diverted to Manchester from the East Coast. Unfortunately the trade had to be given up, owing to the length of the voyage and the irregular arrivals of the vessels. With very few exceptions the Food Stuffs were landed in excellent condition. Fresh kidneys were the worst sufferers, owing to the prolonged voyages, and there was one considerable seizure of bacon. The latter was quite sound on arrival, but was taken possession of three weeks later owing to decomposition and fly blowing whilst lying in a warehouse. IMPORTATION OF LIVE STOCK.
