    Membranous Croup, Puerperal Fever, Small-pox, and Typhus Fever.—The Borough has been entirely free from these diseases throughout the year. Violent and Accidental Deaths.—There were 3 deaths recorded from these causes as against 5 last year. Of the violent deaths, 1 committed suicide by shooting himself. Of the accidents, 1 was from a fall downstairs, the other through being thrown from a trolly. Inquests were held in each case. Tuberculosis.—There were 8 cases of this complaint notified. Of these, 2 cases occurred at the Workhouse, which is outside my district, but in conformity with the Act have to be notified to me. Of these I can give no further information, but of the remainder which occurred in the Borough 4 have died. Of those living in the Borough the houses were inspected, the parents and friends were advised as to the necessary precautions to be taken to prevent the spread of the disease, and after death the houses were disin- fected by the Borough Sanitary Inspector. Visits and Inspection of Premises.—At the close of another year I am able to again congratulate you on the improved sanitary condition of the Borough. The work of searching out the dark spots, removing defective drains, repaving back-yards and damp areas, removing obsolete sanitary fittings, and replacing them with modern appliances has been steadily pushed forward, and on visiting various houses I have not failed to observe the large number of W.C.’s which are now provided with the modern flushing tank, where until recently it was quite conspicuous by its absence. Although no large drainage works have been carried out, a great amount of detail work has been done. Slaughterhouses.—The Sanitary Inspector has these premises under his immediate and regular supervision and I have had no unfavourable report from him in reference to them. The drainage is well maintained, the limewashing attended to, and the manure also removed. Each slaughterhouse is well supplied with water. Bakehouses.—These are all under my personal supervision and the regulations as to limewashing and cleanliness are well observed. There are no underground bakehouses in the Borough, but, all being on the ground floor, there is little or no difficulty experienced in providing light and ventilation. Each bakehouse
