About this work
Description
Mandy McAuley investigates drug trials for vaccines carried out on up to 200 young children in five orphanages in Dublin during the 1960s and 1970s. Victor Boyan was in Birdsnest Industrial School and remembers being given pyjamas and sweets for 10 days while he and others were given injections. The trials were led by Irene Hilary, testing the quadruple vaccine for tetanus, diphtheria, whooping cough and polio in Group A, and polio with Group B. Information has generally been inaccessible to those seeking records. Wellcome is believed to have followed all legal formalities in the tests. The government has promised an enquiry.
