    day, the Editor's task has been a very light one. He has restricted himself merely to the narration of the results of his own experience in a few instances in which they dif- fered from those of the author. There are a few points not noticed, in regard to which the Editor entertains somewhat different views from the Author, but he did not conceive it consistent with the scope of a Manual to discuss them in it; and this seemed the less necessary as his opinions will be found fully expressed elsewhere.* The Illustrations have been carefully engraved after the originals by Gilbert.
