The head« quarters of each regiment, where the commanding officer of the regiment refided, was eftabliffied in a central fituation with refpe^; to the extent of country occupied by the regiment \ each fqua- dron had its commanding officer in the centre of its diflridl,—-and the fubalterns and non-commif- fioned officers w^ere fo diflributed in the different cantonments, that the privates were continually under the infpeftion of their fuperiors, who had orders to keep a w^atchful eye over them \—to vifit them in their quarters very often;—and to preferve the ftricleft order and difcipline among them. To command thefe troops, a general officer was named, who, after vifiting every cantonment in the whole country, took up his refidence at Munich. Printed inftruclions were given to the officer, or non-commiffioned officer, who commanded a de- tached poft, or patrole regular monthly returns were ordered to be made to the commanding offi- cers of the regiment, by the officers commanding fquadrons to the commanding general, by the officers commanding regiments :—and by the com- manding general, to the council of war, and to the Sovereign.
