    or milt. The whole of the interior of the abdomen is lined with a smooth membrane called the peritoneum, or abdomen membrane. Nearly all the organs in the abdomen are quite covered with this membrane, so that the intestines can move easily over them. When the membrane becomes inflamed and diseased, the surface becomes rough, and the condition is known as peri- tonitis.
