A recent Wellcome Trust study, ‘ The Deployment of Science and Maths Leaders in Primary Schools’ (October 2013), found that very few schools have access to high levels of science expertise and that strategic leadership for the subject is weak. This raises concerns about the status of primary science and the accountability systems in place for it. Reinvigorating primary science is a key priority for the Wellcome Trust. ‘Primary Science: is it missing out?’ considers how some of the issues uncovered in our latest study and other work can be addressed, and makes recommendations for the future.
