These lectures illustrate, in a measure, some of the great advantages which women obtain from the aggres- sions of Aseptic Surgery into Obstetric Territory, when pregnancy, parturiency, and puerpery are complicated with tumours in the pelvis. In 1870, Spencer Wells fluttered the practitioners of midwifery by relating successful cases of unilateral ovario- tomy during pregnancy, and pointed out its justifiability. In 1877 he proved it. Ten years later the fact that bi- lateral ovariotomy could be performed when the uterus was gravid without harmful effect on mother or child caused further astonishment; and in 1891 I was able to give references to six successful operations in these cir- cumstances. In 1901 we realise with equanimity that subserous fibroids, even of large size, can be enucleated from the walls of a gravid uterus without interfering with pregnancy, the mother going safely through her confine- ment at tenn, and becoming possessed of a healthy, vigor- ous offspring. 48, Queen Anne Street, July, 1901.
