Can any one who I now have the honor of addreffing, with-hold a tribute of praife, or in- deed of affording pecuniary aid, to carry the prin- ciples of this very laudable inftitution into great- er and more extenfive utility. As the avenues to premature death are very numerous, it would be difficult, and indeed im- proper to defcant upon them all in this place. I {hall therefore only afk your indulgence in the conclufion of this Addrefs, to call your ferious attention to one of the moft common of them, yet the moft general, difgraceful, and fatal, of any that has ever been purfued by mankind. I mean the intemperate ufe of difiilled fpirituous liquors. b Job xxix. ] 3. Note. The Humane Society of the Commonwealth of Mafiachufetts eftablifhed in the year 1786 in Bofton, have much to their credit erefted houfes near the fea, for the bene- fit ot thofe unfortunate Perfons who may be call away upon their coalt. The Honourable Thomas RufTel, Efq. is Prefident of the Society. Much good has refulted from their benevolent Inftitution, as appears from their publications.
