![L No. 8 first appears in a dated book in December, 1505, and is used in five other dated books up to March, i5o6[o7], so that the undated books in which it occurs may fairly be dated about 1506. They could not, as a matter of fa£t, be dated earlier than 1503, on account of the address in their colophons, nor after January, 1508, owing to the absence of a privilege. L No. 10 appears only in one undated book, the Nefde Sante of January, I507[o8], which can be dated by other means. L No. 1, doubtless belonging to Pierre Levet, the printer of the Sydrach, does not seem to occur elsewhere among Verard books. L No. 2, M. Claudin informs me, was used by Jehannot and Le Dru. L No. 3 is little used, and No. 5 only once, in the Boece. L No. 6 is one of two imitations from an original L which may be found in the Livre du Faulcon1 (Paris, s.l.n.d.). One copy was used by Le Caron in 1489 and afterwards transferred to Verard ; another was used by Guillaume Lerouge at Troyes (in his Danse Macabre of 1491).1 2 3 L No. 7, again, is an imitation of one to be found: (1) on the title-page of Le grant Testament Villon % le petit, Paris, n.d. ;3 (2) on the title-page of Le debat des deux bons Seruiteurs (Paris, s.l.s.d.) ;4 5 and (3) on the title-page of Loreloge de deuocion5 printed by Jehannot. The first of these books was, however, M. Claudin believes, printed by Denis Meslier. Of the two imitations of this original, one was used by Guillaume Mignard in his Complainte d'ung Francoys printed at Geneva in 1495,6 the second by Verard. The identification of these L’s is a matter of considerable diffi- culty, because Verard made imitations of L’s that pleased him, and 1 Brit. Mus.
