    The Committee feel it their duty to inform the Court that a demand has been made on them for arrears of income tax by the Surveyor of Taxes amounting to £480. The figures are taken from the Asylum reports, and the tax is charged on the profits made by the Asylum from the excess charge for the patients not belonging to the County, for the whole of the 26 years since the opening of the Asylum. The Committee has postponed its consideration of this demand until the next meeting, and will be happy to receive any advice from the Court which may enable them to avoid payment of the whole or a part of this heavy charge. The North Wings of No. 3 on each side have been raised; the whole cost has been £1048 19s. 4d., of which £1018 has been voted by Quarter Sessions, and the rest will have to be paid out of the Building fund. The Committee have postponed the detached building to the east of the Asylum for the present, and are proceeding with the new Infirmary on the female side. A contract has been made with Mr. Ashman for £7640, which is consider¬ ably in excess of the estimate, amounting to £5540. His tender was the smallest sent in excepting one, which was £18 less, by a person of whom the Committee knew nothing, and they gave it to Mr. Ashman, as he has executed other work to their satisfaction. The long negotiations for providing a Cemetery, which have often been mentioned, and for which the Court has granted £500, are now, it is hoped, approaching their end, and the Bishop, it is expected, will soon consecrate so much of the ground bought as is marked out for the Cemetery. In the autumn Dr. Medlicott received a violent kick from a patient named Joseph Sargent, an epileptic, a criminal
