No text description is available for this image![E 4S ] It is of the utmoft confequence to mention, that when any complaint of violent pain in the ftomach or bowels is made, efpecially if fuch pain be not accompanied by dools, we fhould enquire ftrd about the place in which it is chiefly felt, if that can be pointed out; and next, if it came on rather fud- denly, or foon after performing fome laborious work, efpecially the lifting any great weight, or in¬ deed any conflderable exertion of drength. If this be found to be the cafe, we fhould carefully examine the belly, efpecially that part neared to the feat of the pain; and if any fwelling, or lump, however fmall, be found, even of the fize of a hazel-nut, we may be almod certain, that the caufe of the com¬ plaint originates from thence, and that if it be im- mediately attended to, it may probably be relieved, at lead: the prefent danger obviated; but that if it be neglefted, the patient will almofl; infallibly die. The only remedy on fuch an occalion is, to redo re the portion of the inteftine, which is thus protruded and comprefled between the mufcles of the abdo¬ men, again into the cavity of the belly; and if this be done foon after the accident, it produces no farther injury. But this mud be underdood of fuch cafes only as have a quick attention paid to them, dnee if any delay be made, the danger increafes very ra- f pidly: even a few hours may determine the interval between fafety and death.
