Hole, stated to be the 1st appearance of the only known engraving of Fiorio, here faces p. 1 and has its corresponding blank at beginning : woodcut border to title. Dedications in Italian and English (different) to Queen Anne of Denmark (to whom the author was Reader of the Italian) : the latter runs—This braine-babe...with a travellers minde, as erst Colombus at command of glorious Isabella, it hath (at home) discovered neere half a new world : and therefore as of olde some called Scotia of Scota, and others lately Virginia, &c. This reference to the New World thus explains the title. Prel. verses by II Candido ” [=Matt. Gwinne], Sam. Daniel, Alb. Gentili and others : long list of authors drawn upon. The Dictionary, useful for its obsolete expressions, has special types for indicating pronunciation. The Necessary Rules,” at end, though included in quiring, have a separate title with the imprint of W. Stansby for the same publishers. Sayle 3374 (U.L. Cambr. copy wants portr.).
