    man and Anne his Wife (Appendix X.); but no smdi Daughter is mentioned in James Whatman’s Will (i\.2)pendix VII.) The question here suggests itself: Had “ Elizabeth Sarah ” died and was Susannah Elizabeth another daughter? or was Elizabeth Sarah one and the same person with Susannah, Elizabeth ? In the Whatman pedigree in the ‘ Landed Gentry ’ it is. as I have before observed, stated that Elizabeth Sarah, daughter of James Wliatman and his wife Ann, married Eichard Elliston Philips, but that this is a mistake is proved by the Marriage Register of the Parish of Hoxley (Appendix XI.), from which it appears that on the 13th of December, 1773, Bicliard Elliston Philips married a Susannah Elizabeth Whatman. From this it is evident that if the Miss What- man who married Richard Elhston Philips was one and the same with the Elizabeth Sarah whose baptism is recorded in the Boxley Parish Register under the date of August 24, 1747, she was married under a name not her oivn. The date of the Baptism of Elizabetli Sarah ^Yhatman corresponds with the reputed age of Mrs. Susannah Elizabeth Pliilips (Appendix XII.) It cannot, however, be supposed that IMrs. Philips was bajAized “ Elizabeth Sarah,” and had her name subsequently changed to “ Susannah Elizabeth,” and that, therefore, she was married under a name not her (icn. Thus it is, that in the pedigree of the family of Philips which I have supplied to the Heralds’ College, a complete account of the Birth and Parentage of the Susannah Elizabeth Whatman who married Richard Elliston Philips (Appendix XI.) cannot be given.
