The authorities of Buenos Aires say that they have done their best to promote trade through their port with the other ports of Spanish America, but this Portuguese settlement within a few miles of them is pre- venting it. Discussing the trade done through Buenos Aires. The Portuguese had occupied this Island, and had made a settlement on the adjacent mainland of Uruguay at Colonia del Sacramento, about 1680.
