![Tt is just t’Wf'Tity years since the incorporation of the Borough, the ])0]iulation at tliat time hoing 77,200, and the density of tlie poi)ulation, averaged over tlie wliole incorporated area, 20 06 per acre. Tlie population at the middle of the year 1897 was 1 11,001, giving a density of 28'8.‘3 per acre over the whole Borough. But great as this increase is in the Gleneral Statement, it really does not convey an accurate idea of the true state of things, hecause it is chiefly in certain parts of the town tliat the greatest increase has taken place, and the suhurhan and semi-rural districts of Oxton, Claughton and Behingtou, have not increased in anything like the proportion that the Townships of Birkenhead and Tranmere have done. It is therefore in these two latter districts that the jiressure of crowding is most felt. Thus in 1878 the density of population in the towmship of Birkenhead was 39‘33, whilst it is now 50’62 per acre, and in the tow’nship of Tranmere it is now 31‘83 per acre as against 17 G4 in 1878. The following table shows the comparative figures for the different townships for 1878 and 1897. lOstimated Populatiou. Number of Per- sons per acre.
