TTiv ip-?|v 68bv cannot be the road 7) vvv ’Adrjvaioi ttjv Hv6id5a Tr4fxirovcn Strabo, 422, if the Dolonki went out of their way (iKTpdiroPTaL) to come by Athens. But van Herwerden regards the iK as “ dittographia natum.” That the Dolonki, if they Avent to Delphi at all, Avent via Athens is possible, though Peisistratos was not on the best terms Avith the oracle. The Sacred Way may be the road to Eleusis, on Avhich, in the Deme Lakiadai, was the family house of the Philaidai (Plutarch, Kimon, 10, C. I. A. i. 179), although the Deme of their oAvn name Avas near Brauron, and Avith it they presumably had at some time a local connexion. Thracians might very well be on the road to or from Brauron (as their port): the refer- ence to the Sacred Way may be due to the position of the family house in Hdt.’s time. There was nothing unusual in an Athenian’s having land and houses in more than one Deme (cp. Haussoullier, Vie rminidpale en Altique, p. 67). 36. 2. TTiviKavra. The adventure of Miltiades Avill fall during the first usurpa- tion of Peisistratos c. 559 b.c. Cp. Clinton, Fast. Hell, ii.® p. 232, Toeppfer, Attisch. Geneal. p. 280. 3. 48wd(TTru€. Lykurgos, son of Aristolaides, is represented, 1. 59, as leader of the Pediaei. Probably Milti- ades, son of Kypselos, Avas only second to him. At a later time Isagoras, son of Tisandros, that is probably a man of the Pbilaid lineage, Avas leader of the faction. See 5. 66, and c. 128 infra. MiXtioStis. This Miltiades was not the first of the name (and lineage) if PausaniasAvais right in making aMiltiades Archon in 664 b.c., and again in 659 B.C., Pausan. 4. 23, 5, and 8. 39, 2. Cp. Clinton, F. H. od ann. Kv\}f€Xou. This Kypselos was prob- ably a namesake and relative of the great Corinthian. Cp. c. 128 infra, and the analogous instance of the Athenian Kleisthenes, 5. 69. Another tradition (Pau- san. 1. 35, 2) placed Philaios a step further from Aias, making him son of Eurysakes, the only son of Aias recog- nised by Sophokles (Petersen, Quaes- tiones etc., p. 18). 8. alxfias. The carrying arms, and spears not least of all, Avould have been out of fashion by that time (Thuc. 1. 6), not to say contrary to the Peisistratid police regulations! (Thuc. 6. 56, 2). (The i^oir'Kiffla recorded ’A0. ir. 15 is, however, dated to the (.supposed) ‘ third ’ usurpation. This of course is quite differ- ent from the act of Hippias, recorded by Thuc. 6. 58. Cp. Appendix IX.) 11. avrov . . piv. i84ovro requires a genitive (c. 13 su])ra, 5. 81), and puv is accusative before the infinitive in or. ohliq. Just below rd should be rwv but for attraction.
