Or, the two might be covered by the accusative of respect. Cp. Kiihner, Ausfiihrl. Crramm. d. Gr. Spr. § 433, where this instance is not quoted. 12. TaXdvToio-i. Grote, in a well- known passage (iv. pp. 53 ff., Pt. ii. c. xxxvi.), has argued that the ypa.<p^ must have been Tifirjrbs and that the people, after the verdict of guilty, had no choice but to accept one of the alternatives. Meier and Schbmann, 1. c. s., represent the ypatpi] irpodoaias as irlp-Tp-os, regarding the death penalty as fixed, on the ground that irpo5o<j-La does not admit of degrees : but con- sidering the w’ay the Athenians classi- fied homicide we may be sure they would have been able to discriminate high treason from treason felony! Plato, Gory. 516, seems to suggest that Milti- ades only escaped by the casting vote of the Prytanis, if, indeed, that re- ference be historic, or referable to this occasion. Hdt. does not say that Miltiades could not have paid the fine had he lived. On the payment, cp. Plu- tarch’s Kimon 4, which explains where Kimon got the money. This notice would not have been a good advertisement for the Ionian’s works at Athens, un- less, indeed, there were some good men anxious to rake up old sins and do penance therefor: a form of patriotism which the Greeks do not seem to have cultivated much. rd Xryd|ji£va includes written author- ity (Hekataios ^(prjae iv Tolffi Xo'yaurt \iyu3v) and oral tradition (ws 5^ abrol 'X6. \iyovaC), if, indeed, the latter ver- sion was not also in writing. In- troduction, § 20. 5. liretTe -yap . . ’AGqvaCovs. Prac- tically a quotation from Hekataios, and, as Blakesley remarks, a<pLffL abroicn seems to show that Hekataios had the story from ‘ Pelasgian ’ (Lemnian ?) sources. 7. Kore. The word can hardly he used with reference to the writer’s own day. It might almost seem as if the wall had been built long before the grant of land was made. Anyway the Korre here marks a different epoch to the words tovtov rbv xP'^j'ov infra. Ac- cording to Strabo, 401 (Hekataios ?), these Pelasgi came into Attica from Boeotia, driven forth by the invading Boeotians. The wall is named rb He- \aayiKbv reixos 5. 64 supra, hut the better form was undoubtedly rb He- XapyiKbv. Cp. Appendix IX. § 4. 11. ws . . ’AOqvatoi X^-yovo-i. Ed. Meyer, Forschungen, p. 8, argues that there was no genuine Attic tradition in regard to the Pelasgi in Attica, and that wo have in Hdt. merely an Attic reply to the charge of Hekataios. If Pelasgi$
