    The removal of the unsatisfactory sanitary facilities availab^ in the past, by the enlargement of all sanitary accom¬ modation throughout the Hospital. A considerable step forward in the direction of efficiency by the establishment of a Central Pathological Laboratory, which is calculated to assist so much the efficient treatment of patients in the future. A big improvement in the busy Surgery and Casualty Depart¬ ment, which Department dealing as it does with the first attendance of every patient coming to the Hospital is, in fact, one of the most important Departments of the Hospital. And, lastly, an extension of the usefulness of the Infirmary long overdue by the establishment of a Unit of Private Wards for the benefit of people of moderate means. The receipt and advice of some very handsome legacies and contributions which have been earmarked for capital purposes will be used to pay for this scheme of reorganisation, and it is confidently anticipated that the amount in the aggregate will be sufficient to complete the scheme free of debt. But it should be said that the provision of the Private Wards is due to the generosity of the Trustees of the late Clement Walker, who have made us a grant sufficient to build and equip it. For this we are most grateful. The greatest anxiety of your Board in connection with the scheme is the fact that the increase in the number of beds and the extension of other facilities will involve the Hospital in a considerable increase of annual expenditure. The problem has occupied the earnest attention of your Board for some time, and schemes for increasing our income have been carefully considered. Your Board, however, have refrained from making any drastic alteration in existing schemes. They have chosen to pin their faith to the fact that with the abolition of a waiting list, and a marked improvement in all our facilities, the goodwill of the Hospital will increase accordingly and sufficient income will be forthcoming to maintain even an enlarged Hospital.
