J. 88:85-87, Aug. 194.5. ‘Sulfathalidine’ phthalylsulfathiazole possesses strong bacteriostatic properties when administered in doses of 0.125 Gm. per kilogram of body weight every four hours. The drug was effective in both acute and chronic cases of ulcerative colitis. Improvement was observed in all of the acute cases and in 30 of 35 chronic cases. Cramping in the abdomen subsided within forty-eight hours, blood in the stools disappeared, the stools became formed and odorless, and the number of evacuations were reduced. Fever in the acute cases was reduced within from forty-eight to seventy-two hours following administration of phthalylsulfathiazole. Bargen, J. A.: Sulfathalidine* in Intestinal Disease, Proc. In the treatment of acute and chronic streptococcic ulcerative colitis with phthalylsulfathiazole, a favorable response was observed in 26 patients, fair in 1, slight in 1, and no response in 9. Response was judged by reduction in bowel motion, decrease or disappearance of blood from the stools, and relief from symptoms of toxemia. ‘Sulfathalidine’ phthalylsulfathiazole has certain advantages over other drugs employed for the treatment of intestinal conditions, since it is less toxic, is effective in smaller dosage, and produces favorable results when other drugs are ineffective or cause toxic reactions. Six patients with chronic ulcerative colitis responded satisfactorily to treatment with ‘Sulfathalidine’ phthalylsulfathiazole in a dosage of 0.02 Gm. per kilogram of body weight every four hours. One patient received the drug continuously for ten months without evidence of toxic reactions. “The number of cases treated is too small to draw any definite conclusions, but it appears that this compound is at least as effec- tive as any of the other sulfonamides in bringing about and main- taining the patient in a remission.”’ * See footnote page 7.
