    Formula: ‘Sulfasuxidine’ succinylsulfathiazole is a dicarboxylic acid derivative of sulfathiazole synthesized in the Medical Re- search Laboratories of Sharp & Dohme. Succinylsulfathiazole is the short common name for the chemical compound 2-(p-succiny] aminobenzenesulfonamido)-thiazole, represented by the structural formula O S—CH — | | | yee | | I HOOC CH,CH,CO NH )-S-NH-€ CH ad | Se O N It is a white, crystalline powder sparingly soluble in alcohol, ace- tone and water, but readily soluble in sodium bicarbonate solution. Characteristics: “Sulfasuxidine’ succinylsulfathiazole is an enteric sulfonamide that is relatively nontoxic in therapeutic doses. It maintains a high concentration in the gastrointestinal tract and a low concentration in the blood. It is poorly absorbed from the bowel, and an average of only 5 per cent of the ingested drug is excreted by the kidneys. The bacteriostatic action of the compound markedly alters the bacterial flora and rapidly reduces the number of Escherichia coli and related organisms. Feces become semifluid and practically odorless. Dysentery bacilli such as Shiga, Flexner and Sonne strains are susceptible to the bacteriostatic action of ‘Sulfasuxi- dine’ succinylsulfathiazole. The drug is also effective in the pres- ence of ulcerating lesions in the bowel.
