    Ulcerative Colitis Borland, J. L.: Treatment of Some Common Infections of the Bowel with Sulfonamide Drugs, South. M. J. 39:285-289, April 1946. ‘Sulfasuxidine’ succinylsulfathiazole was employed in the treatment of two patients with chronic ulcerative colitis in an attempt to check the progress of the disease and to induce a remission. The preliminary step was to control the diarrhea and bleeding and to bring the bowel back to normal by the administration of sulfadia- zine. One patient remained free of symptoms, with no evidence of mucosal inflammation or bleeding, for four months on a daily dosage of 4 Gm. of succinylsulfathiazole. The second patient re- mained normal for one month, at which time the drug was discon- tinued. The return of symptoms a month later necessitated a second course of sulfadiazine. Pollard, H. M.: The Clinical Use of Succinylsulfathiazole in Chronic Ulcerative Colitis, Gastroenterology 4:4-8, Jan. 1945. Administration of succinylsulfathiazole in a dosage usually of 12 Gm. daily for two or three weeks produced a clinical response in 77 per cent of 36 patients with chronic ulcerative colitis. In several cases an elevated temperature of one to three months’ duration was reduced to normal forty-eight hours after therapy was begun. A decrease in number of daily stools, improvement in appetite, and gain in weight occurred in a number of patients. Although the bowel is not sterilized, it is believed that the intestinal bacteria are altered sufficiently by the drug to return the bowel to a more normal physiologic state. Crohn, B. B.: The Clinical Use of Succinyl Sulfathiazole (Sulfasuxidine*), Gastroenterology 1:140-146, Feb. 1943. Of 28 patients with ulcerative colitis (nonspecific) treated with ‘Sulfasuxidine’ succinylsulfathiazole, a cure was effected in 5, and 11 showed improvement. No response was elicited in 10 patients, and in 2 toxic reactions necessitated discontinuance of the drug. The dosage was 0.25 Gm. per kilogram of body weight for ten days, followed by a second series after a lapse of five days. Recognition *See footnote page 7.
