    pneumococcic pneumonia or bronchitis showed that sulfamerazine is as effective as sulfadiazine. Adequate blood concentrations could be maintained with smaller, less frequent doses of sulfamerazine than of sulfadiazine. Sulfamerazine also caused a more abrupt fall in temperature in patients with pneumonia. Toxic reactions occurred no more frequently with sulfamerazine than with sulfadiazine. Ade- quate fluid intake and alkalization of the urine may prevent urinary complications during administration of sulfamerazine and sulfa- diazine. Flippin, H. F., Gefter, W. I., Domm, A. Sulfamerazine was administered to 80 patients with pneumonia and sulfadiazine was given to a similar number. The mortality rate was 7.5 per cent in the sulfamerazine treated group as compared with 10 per cent in the sulfadiazine group. Clinical response, as mani- fested by a fall in temperature, occurred somewhat more rapidly with sulfamerazine than with sulfadiazine, possibly due to the higher and more rapidly attained blood concentrations in the case of the former. Within seventy-two hours the temperature returned to normal in 72.9 per cent of patients receiving sulfamerazine and in 59.8 per cent of patients to whom sulfadiazine was administered. To obtain optimal blood concentrations while treating patients with meningococcic meningitis, sodium sulfamerazine was administered subcutaneously in an initial dose of 60 cc. of 0.5 per cent solution per kilogram of body weight and subsequently doses of 20 cc. per kilogram every eight hours. After two days 0.1 Gm. of sulfamera- zine per kilogram was given orally every eight hours, and this dosage was halved when infection was under control. Parenteral administration was continued for longer periods without untoward effects in meningitis due to the pneumococcus, hemolytic strepto- coccus or influenza bacillus. Prompt response to sulfamerazine treatment occurred in all 17 cases of acute meningococcic menin- gitis and also in pneumococcic and influenzal meningitis.
