    fourth. These two sulfonamides were equally effective as therapeutic agents in both conditions. Toxic reactions were not encountered ex- cept for microscopic hematuria in three infants receiving sulfadiazine. Winters, K. J., and Janney, F. R.: Sulfadiazine. Review of Its Use in Treatment of Children, Am. J. Dis. Child. 65:702-711, May 1943. Sulfadiazine was administered to 90 children for the treatment of a variety of conditions such as osteomyelitis, pneumonia, bronchitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, acute otitis media, empyema, cervical and axillary adenitis, meningitis, cellulitis, pyelitis and impetigo. This sulfonamide was found to be especially effective against hemolytic streptococci, pneumococci, Staphylococcus aureus haemolyticus, meningococci and Haemophilus influenzae. For the treatment of most infections a daily dosage of 34 to 1 grain per pound of body weight is recommended, which will produce average blood levels of 7 to 10 mg. per 100 cc. Satterthwaite, R. Sulfadiazine proved to be an effective chemotherapeutic agent for the treatment of urinary tract infections, especially those due to Proteus vulgaris, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and the gonococcus. Escherichia and Aerobacter infections respcnded as well to sulfa- diazine as to sulfathiazole. Prophylactic use of this drug after operative procedures on urological patients has resulted in a decrease to 1 per cent in the incidence of upper respiratory tract complica- tions. Fifty-eight toxic reactions occurred in 500 patients (11.6 per cent). These may be prevented by control of dosage and duration of therapy and by close observation of blood levels and blood counts. The prophylactic use of sulfadiazine in a dosage of 0.5 or 1.0 Gm. daily was evaluated in approximately 600,000 Naval personnel in comparison with a control group of 300,000. A decrease in the incidence of streptococcic respiratory infections was observed at the end of the first week of treatment, and by the
