    end of one month the incidence of scarlet fever, tonsillitis and rheumatic fever declined to a low level. Hospital admissions for respiratory diseases numbering from 5 to 18 per 1,000 per month decreased to less than 1 per 1,000 per month. Meningococcic infec- tions were eliminated, and at some Naval stations, pneumonia cases were reduced by 50 to 80 per cent. Hodges, R. A sharp increase was noted in hospital admissions due to strepto- coccic and pneumococcic infections in a large military group. For prophylactic purposes sulfadiazine was given in a daily dosage of ionmzeGine This drug had the greatest effect on the incidence of streptococcic infections, reducing to almost zero the number of cases of follicular tonsillitis and scarlet fever. Pneumococcic infections also were pre- vented. Since pneumococcic were typed from 75 per cent of the patients with lobar pneumonia, the reductions in incidence was believed to be due to the effect of sulfadiazine on the pneumococci. Evidence of the prophylactic effectiveness of sulfadiazine against ordinary respiratory disease and acute rheumatic fever also was obtained. Lewis, W. During an outbreak of meningococcic meningitis in an Army camp, the carrier rates in military and civilian groups were found to be 12.5 per cent and up to 42.3 per cent respectively. All carriers were admitted to hospital and received 2 Gm. of sulfadiazine daily for two days, followed by 1 Gm. daily for two days, and in some in- stances sulfanilamide in addition. All but one became negative after sulfadiazine or subsequent sulfanilamide therapy. Elimination of the carriers appeared to control the disease. Subsequent prophylactic administration of sulfadiazine was in- stituted in the entire military and civilian camp personnel while on duty. No new case of meningitis occurred except for one in an un- treated control group, and the carrier rate one month after sul- fadiazine therapy was found to be 0.75 per cent.
