About this work

Description

The female nude is divided vertically by horizontal lines into eight parts, each based on the proportional unit of the length of the head. The length of the arm and the width of the hips have had the same measures applied. The child, who holds a leaf before the woman in order to cover her genitals is divided into five parts. This is also based on the proportional unit of the length of the head, which in the case of the child is slightly shorter than that of the adult

The designer and etcher was José García Hidalgo (1656-1718), a painter in the service of kings Charles II and Philip V of Spain. He was advisor on paintings to the Spanish Inquisition, and was described by a contemporary as "of strange and extravagant temper". This was one of the etchings which he produced to instruct painters in anatomy, knowledge of which was essential to the figure-painter
