In eighteen of tliese cases the summonses were witlulrawn, tire work re(|uirod being completed or in liand before the ilatei of the bearing. In the remaining ten cases, ibe .Magistrates made orders for the exec-ution of tlie work. Of the ten ca.ses where orders*were made, eight were complied. In llie remaining two ca.ses. the owner failed to comply with the tiourt Oitlei's and fines of £.5 and £1 weie imposed, together with a daily penalty of ten shillings in each case. One ca.se was instituted against a local firm to abate tlie emission of noxious effluvia. On the submis.sion of Defending Ckninsel tlie .lustices dismissed tlie case on legal grounds. WOIIK CAIIUIKD OUT 15V THE CORPOI{ATION IN THE OWNERS DEFAULT: In certain cases the Corporation is empowered to com|)ly wiili the terms of Notices served upon owners of jiroiierty in case of the owners default and without reference to the Courts. During the year the Corporation hare executed work and charged the owners with the cost thereof in the following cases:— (1) Cleansing or repair of blocked or defective drains and repairs to defective W.tk’s under Section 49 of the Smethwick (’or])oration Act The supply of galvanised iron ashbins with covers (‘■i) The execution of maintenance reiiairs under the Housing Act. 19:56 . 97 cases :569 cases 2 causes WASTE WATKR CLOSET CONV'ERSIONS. Up to the commencement of the war .532 conversions had taken place at an average cost of £7 9s. :5d., the amount borne by the Corporation towards the cost of the .5.32 conver.sions being £1,859 is. 4d. HOUSING ACT, i9:56.—OVERCROAVDING. The number of dwellings overcrowded at the end of the year totalled 90, involving 93 families. The average si/.e of the overcrowded families is 7'3 persons. RATS AND -AIICE DE.STRUCTION. Progre.ss in eradiction of rats and mice has been well maintained during the year. The number of iiremises cleared of rats totalled 276, and the estimated number of rats destroyed amounted to 3,269. Treatment of two Corporation tips situated outside the lloroiigh was carried out, resulting in the destruction of .500 rats. Treatment of the sewers was also carricil out during the year. The number of inanholes pre-baited was 866, and 460 manholes were poi.son baited. The number of manholes, where bait was wholly or partially taken, totalled 210. FACTORIES ACT. 1937. The number of visits paid to factories during the year was 167 and defects in connection wii.h .sanitary conveniences were found in six cases. As a result of the service of Notices the defects at these six factories were remedied. Three notices were received from H.Al.
