About this work

Description

"Handala consists of photographs from the 2013 Librarians and Archivists to Palestine trip, compiled by Josh MacPhee that document the universally popular and omnipresent symbol of defiance, Handala, portrayed as a young Palestinian refugee, wearing tattered clothes and standing with back turned, who refuses to grow up until he can return to his homeland. Handala, created by Naji al-Ali, a Palestinian cartoonist murdered in 1987, turns up everywhere: in graffiti, and on tee shirts, key chains, car decals, and shop window."-- Summarised by cataloguer, Columbia University Libraries.
