    the ardent vaccinators, as the only infallible proof of security ! Unfortunately, indentation proves no infallible sign, as many have had the Small Pox with the Cow-pox indenta¬ tion on the arm, which will be fully proved. This criterion was in consequence supported by some, and abandoned by others, amongst the warmest and most conspicuous vac¬ cinators. Here opposition, violent disputation, and discord enter the regions of vaccination. EXCUSE IV. When the facts of Small Pox happening after Cow-pox inoculation increased, and it was impossible to deny the self- evident proofs, then an arch question in the Socratic way was proposed with great solemnity, and repeated through all the ranks of the vaccinators. “ Have there not appear¬ ed many instances of persons having the Small Pox twice ? This question gratified and satisfied many weak, unreflect¬ ing, or prejudiced minds: but I answer this question from an experience of fifty years, not only from my own know-* ledge, but that of the most eminent Small-pox inoculators and surgeons, that the Small Pox never appears a second time after the patient has regularly passed through its four dis¬ tinguished stages.
