    place either from a similar or from a different cause, because many elderly patients are about equally liable to an attack of haemorrhage or an attack of cerebral softening. And speaking generally, it may certainly be said that the liability to recurrence increases very notably with the age of the patient in whom paralytic symptoms have already shown themselves. Treatment. This part of our subject has to be considered from three points of view. We must look—(i) to the best means of averting a threatened attack of paralysis; (2) to the treatment of the apoplectic condition; and (3) we have to look to the thera- peutic measures most calculated to restore power to the palsied limbs, or to improve other related ano- malies which frequently accompany the hemiplegic condition. (1) Under the first of these heads it is almost im- possible to give any but very general directions, since the most prudent course to adopt in different cases depends so much upon the particular symptoms pre- sented and upon the age and state of health of individual patients. Each case, therefore, as it occurs, must necessarily be made the subject of
