The endoplasm then loses its power of absorbing stain, and the l)ody of the organism becomes flattened and consideraljly increased in width, assuming more ur less the outline of a lizard. These forms are })articularly fragile and are more than likely to be injured during the process of making smears of blood, which contain them, if too much pressure be used. The mici’o-granules become scattered throughout tlie endoplasm, and in some instances the nutritive nucleus also breaks up and the fragments are widely disseminated. The margin of the undulating mem- brane, always well developed in this species of trypanosoma, a|)pears to take a deeper red stain, and become somewhat broader, during the period tlie organism is undergoing the ])rocess of enlargement and flattening. The length from the blepharo})last to tlie end of the free flagellum in the two specimens illustrated (PI. II, Figs. 25-26) measure 67‘24 and 66'42yu. and the breadth 13'12 and 11 respectively, but these measurements do not indicate the full length of the [)arasites, as the posterior portion is not included. Occasionally one meets with a parasite in which the ble})haroplast is enlarged, but no definite re-duplication or dumb-bell formation could he made out. The nutritive nucleus has not unfrequently been oliserved to move poste- riorly, so that it takes up a position close to or in apposi- tion with the smaller nucleus. I have not up to the present encountered any trypanosomata which exhibited any marked indications of division in their longitudinal axes, and am inclined to look upf)ii this mode of reproduction as being uncommon in the peripheral blood, at all events shortly before the deatli of the host. As I shall have to go into some detail with regard to the results of my observations as to a mode of reproduction not yet described in trypanosomata further on in this paper, when descriliincf the changes encountered in a tliird form of tiypanosoma whicli in all probability are similar to the changes observed in this parasite, I will avoid recapitulation, and now pass on to contrast the characteristics of the 7\ llmialmjanum with a species of flagellate discovered b}^ Theiler in 19U3 in the blood of cattle in South Africa.](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b22463525_0030.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
